Slender Goldenrod can appear "ordinary" for a goldenrod, but its stems and leaves are smooth (hairless), except for tiny hairs in the inflorescence branches. S. speciosa is similar in the field, but may reach 6', and has a broader, more crowded, and showier inflorescence. Read more at Vascular Plants of North Carolina.

If a search such as "Carex leptalea var. leptalea" doesn't deliver the results you want, try "Carex leptalea".
Or, to minimize chances of a misspelling, try just "Carex le".
Less is more: If "pencil flower" doesn't deliver the results you want, try "pencil".
