Dig deeper at SERNEC, a consortium of southeastern herbaria.
Extremely like E. pallida -- two differences are the width of the ray flowers and the color of the pollen. Read more at Vascular Plants of North Carolina.
Some of the more eastern disjunct populations previously considered to be E. pallida are actually E. simulata; additional work is needed to disentangle the relative distributions of these two species in our area. Read more in Weakley's Flora (2022).

If a search such as "Carex leptalea var. leptalea" doesn't deliver the results you want, try "Carex leptalea".
Or, to minimize chances of a misspelling, try just "Carex le".
Less is more: If "pencil flower" doesn't deliver the results you want, try "pencil".
