Inflorescence a dense panicle, with crowded ascending branches, the numerous heads not secund. S. rigidiuscula is similar to S. speciosa but is more slender, its basal leaves are withered at flowering time, and the leaves are much narrower, never exceeding 2.5cm, per The Illustrated Flora of Illinois: Asteraceae, Part 1 (Mohlenbrock, 2015).
