Dig deeper at SERNEC, a consortium of southeastern herbaria.
The two Mayaca species are quite unusual plants, resembling mosses. Each is semi-aquatic, mostly growing above the water surface but sometimes submerged or partly so. The stems are much branched, barely just 1-3 inches tall, growing in very dense stands, rather mat-like. Leaves are very numerous, linear and only about 1/4-inch long. Often treated just as a single species, variously named as one or the other. Read more at Vascular Plants of North Carolina.

If a search such as "Carex leptalea var. leptalea" doesn't deliver the results you want, try "Carex leptalea".
Or, to minimize chances of a misspelling, try just "Carex le".
Less is more: If "pencil flower" doesn't deliver the results you want, try "pencil".
