Phacelia bipinnatifida and Hydrophyllum virginianum are sometimes confused. P. bipinnatifida has the larger and more basal leaves distinctly bipinnatifid, the lower pinnae often stalked (vs. pinnatifid, the basal or terminal pinnae sometimes 2-lobed, all the pinnae more-or-less sessile).
