American Glasswort is an annual, short-branched, fleshy-textured plant that typically grows 4-12 inches tall. For many decades this plant went by the name of S. europaea. Read more at Vascular Plants of North Carolina.
It is unclear whether our eastern North American plants are distinct from European plants of the S. europaea complex. Until further studies are completed, it seems best to recognize our plants as distinct. The oldest name available for the American plants is Salicornia virginica L., which has unfortunately been generally misapplied to the perennial glasswort, here treated as Salicornia ambigua. If a search such as "Carex leptalea var. leptalea" doesn't deliver the results you want, try "Carex leptalea".
Or, to minimize chances of a misspelling, try just "Carex le".
Less is more: If "pencil flower" doesn't deliver the results you want, try "pencil".
