Ctenium aromaticum
FAMILY
Poaceae

Dig deeper at SERNEC, a consortium of southeastern herbaria.
Its inflorescence is held horizontally or ascending (but almost always "bent" from the angle of the stem) and looking like a fine-toothed comb, averaging 3-4" long. In autumn after seedfall, the inflorescences curl into attractive shapes. Learn more at Vascular Plants of North Carolina.
The entire plant is aromatic and numbs the mouth, tongue, and lips when chewed, hence the specific epithet and common names. Sterile clumps can be recognized by the rather broad, bicolored leaves (bluish on the upper surface, bright green on the lower surface). Read more in Weakley's Flora (2023).

If a search such as "Carex leptalea var. leptalea" doesn't deliver the results you want, try "Carex leptalea".
Or, to minimize chances of a misspelling, try just "Carex le".
Less is more: If "pencil flower" doesn't deliver the results you want, try "pencil".
