This is a familiar, rather large tree. It normally does not form solid stands anywhere, but it is usually seen mixed with other pines or with hardwoods. Read more at Vascular Plants of North Carolina.
Where their ranges overlap, P. echinata often co-occurs with, and is sometimes confused with, P. virginiana. Both species have short needles and small cones that tend to persist on the trees. From a distance, P. echinata has a "fuzzy" look with a rounded crown, and lacks the slender "spiky" branches of P. virginiana projecting at angles upwards from the crown. Learn other differences in Weakley's Flora (2023).

If a search such as "Carex leptalea var. leptalea" doesn't deliver the results you want, try "Carex leptalea".
Or, to minimize chances of a misspelling, try just "Carex le".
Less is more: If "pencil flower" doesn't deliver the results you want, try "pencil".
