Trilisa paniculata is similar, but its inflorescence has very short branches and appears spike-like as opposed to a more flat-topped or rounded inflorescence in Carphephorus. Read more at Vascular Plants of North Carolina.
The specific epithet is somewhat misleading; C. tomentosus is highly variable in its pubescence, ranging from glabrate to densely hirsute, per Weakley's Flora (2022)

If a search such as "Carex leptalea var. leptalea" doesn't deliver the results you want, try "Carex leptalea".
Or, to minimize chances of a misspelling, try just "Carex le".
Less is more: If "pencil flower" doesn't deliver the results you want, try "pencil".
