Dig deeper at SERNEC, a consortium of southeastern herbaria.
When growing together, the flowering period of T. nesophilum is about 2-3 weeks later than that of T. dichotomum. Read more in Weakley's Flora (2023).
In the 1980s, Leonard and Weakley noted low, shrubby, perennial Trichostema plants growing at Bald Head Island (Brunswick County) and other cape and barrier island sites in southern NC. The plants had lavender flowers and were quite different from local T. dichotomum plants, which were erect, herbaceous annuals with blue flowers. T. suffrutescens was the only known shrubby species in the Southeast; however, these North Carolinian plants differed in growth form, leaf shape, and flower color, were disjunct, and occupied a different habitat. See more in McClelland & Weakley, 2019.
This is a "bushy", almost woody-looking species, with numerous stiff branches, yielding a somewhat rounded form, as opposed to a narrower and often taller form with S. dichotomum, which can also grow in sandy coastal soil. Read more at Vascular Plants of North Carolina.

Or, to minimize chances of a misspelling, try just "Carex le".
Less is more: If "pencil flower" doesn't deliver the results you want, try "pencil".
