This plant is often the most oceanward perennial plant, often the first perennial to colonize the upper beach or incipient dunes on island-end flats, where it occurs with such upper beach annuals as Euphorbia polygonifolia, Euphorbia bombensis, Cakile edentula, and Amaranthus pumilus, per Weakley's Flora (2022)
